Cosmo said “it’s a nun girl summer!” and I am here for nuns becoming part of the current online discourse.

If you don’t know this about me, I’m a cradle Catholic. I went to Catholic school from kindergarten to twelfth grade, and one of my favorite things about going to Catholic school were the nuns who taught us and worked in administration! I love nuns SO MUCH. There were some incredibly sweet nuns who worked at the schools I attended. I have a lot of respect for both men and women who follow faith vocations, but especially nuns. They are so smart and sharp and full of joy, and dare I say, badass. And their vow of poverty? It’s incredibly admirable.

Sister Miriam and the Dominican Sisters Open Mic Podcast

So with with my love of nuns, I have been so happy to see The Dominican Sisters Open Mic Podcast go viral. A snippet of one of their podcasts has become a popular Tiktok sound (a funny clip about not wanting a hobby), and clips have even reached Paige DeSorbo and Hanna Berner. Cosmo described the sisters’ podcast as “a breath of fresh air out of all of the doomscrolling” online. I completely agree, but Sister Miriam, who hosts the pod, and her fellow Dominican sisters are so much more than funny sound bites and sweet podcast moments.

When you dig into the actual meat of each podcast episode, they are full of interesting stories about how each sister was called to her vocation, and the episodes cover a wide variety of topics about faith and the Catholic Church. The sisters also share wonderful nuggets of wisdom from their own personal faith journeys. One of my favorite quotes is from the episode with Sister Irenaeus who while talking about her own insecurities and feelings of “being a mess” says:

“But I’m His mess and that each one of our listeners, that they are also His mess. And that Christ comes in the messiness. We might feel a little bit lost, but the parables tell us that the Lord loves lost things. And He never gets tired of looking for the lost.”

I jokingly posted about how following nuns on social media and listening to their podcasts will calm your nervous system, but I was actually being quite serious. Listening to these sisters is like sitting down with old friends. You feel like you know them. I cannot wait to dive into more episodes and learn more from these wonderful women!

There are so many other amazing nuns to follow on social media. A favorite of mine is Sister Patricia Elaine from the Apostles of the Sacred Heart. She is pictured holding the chicken in my header photo. She is wildly funny and is so full of joy. I also love Sister Miriam James Heidland from the Society of Our Lady the Most Holy Trinity. She has an amazing conversion story, and such a soothing presence. I love everything she does on the Hallow App. So go follow some nuns! Their joy and love for the Lord is contagious!

Renee Renovates

Speaking of calming your nervous system, have you ever watched home renovation videos on TikTok? Home renovation TikTok is one of my favorite corners of the internet. My absolute favorite creator is Renee from Renee Renovates! She’s restoring her beautiful, old house, and since I’m a sucker for old houses, it’s so fun to follow along in her renovation adventures. Renee is insanely handy and capable. She makes everything look so easy, she will have you deluding yourself into thinking you can make a dining table or put up detailed trim in your entryway too!

Granny Flat Comedy

I’m a big fan of Australian actor and funny guy, Luke Cook. I saw recently that he was in a skit with, Nicholas Burton and Dave Hoey from Granny Flat comedy. The skit with Luke is hilarious. Explaining something funny isn’t actually funny, so just go watch it for yourself. But I will say it involves Luke’s weird camel impression, Robert Irwin, and the creepy song from the movie Apex that’s gone viral. I love sketch comedy on Instagram, so I got sucked into a hole of watching a ton of Nicholas and Dave’s videos, and they are so bizarre in the best way. They did a spoof of Wuthering Heights and they do a running series where they do interpretive dances to popular songs (my favorite is Choosin Texas by Ella Langley). They also have lots of random celebrities make cameos. If you need a good laugh, check them out!
